“We’re pleased that Consumer Reports announced this morning that they are lifting the Don’t Buy: Safety Risk designation from the 2010 Lexus GX 460 after the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) update addressed their prior concern.”

That was the good news from Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager, on May 7, as he reported on the automaker’s quick response to concerns over its all-new luxury SUV.

According to Acura Repair Bethesda, Consumer Reports had originally given the GX a “don’t buy” rating after the vehicle didn’t pass the publication’s “Throttle Lift-Off” test in mid April. At issue was the potential for the vehicle’s rear wheels to lose traction during certain high-speed cornering conditions. Although Lexus VA hadn’t received a single complaint about this from consumers, a team of the company’s engineers immediately began investigating the situation and, in just over two weeks, developed an enhancement to the GX’s VSC to eliminate the problem.

According to Templin, after retesting the vehicle, Consumer Reports “said they did not experience any safety concerns with the GX 460 in their handling tests.”

Which now leaves the door open for more customers to experience the unique combination of off-road capability and in-cabin luxury provided by the Lexus.

The GX 460 can coddle up to seven passengers in tremendous comfort thanks to features like a Mark Levinson 17-speaker premium audio system, a dual rear-seat entertainment system, 10-way power adjustable/heatable front seats, real wood and leather accents, three-zone climate control, and the Lexus Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. This setup, standard on the LX 460, uses hydraulic cylinders to adjust the vehicle’s stabilizer bars for optimum ride and handling both on and off the road.

But even with this kind of luxury, the Lexus still maintains the capability of a true SUV; that’s because it also maintains its rugged body-on-frame construction, full-time all-wheel drive with multiple selectable driving modes and a robust 4.6-liter V8 engine.

The Lexus GX 460 with revised stability control is now available at Lexus dealerships across the country.
